Room-in-roof insulation is designed for loft conversions or attic bedrooms. It keeps the top of your home cozy and energy-efficient by insulating the sloping roof surfaces, gable ends, and any dwarf walls. Without proper insulation, up to a quarter of your home’s heat can escape through the roof — which means higher energy bills and a chillier space. By adding insulation, you create a warmer, quieter, and more comfortable living area all year round.
Survey and Preparation
Start by inspecting the roof space to check the condition of rafters, wiring, and ventilation routes. Ensure the area is dry and structurally sound.
Choose the Right Insulation Material
Common choices include rigid PIR boards for a sleek fit or mineral wool slabs for flexibility and soundproofing. Both options deliver strong thermal performance.
Measure and Cut Insulation
Carefully measure the distance between rafters and cut the insulation boards or slabs to size. Aim for a snug fit — gaps can reduce performance.
Install Between Rafters
Fit the insulation between rafters, leaving a small air gap (around 50 mm) behind it for ventilation to prevent moisture build-up.
Add a Secondary Layer (Optional)
For extra warmth, you can fix an additional layer of insulation over the rafters before plasterboarding. This helps eliminate cold bridges.
Fix a Vapour Control Layer
Staple or tape a vapour barrier over the insulation to stop warm, moist air from the room reaching the colder roof layers.
Finish with Plasterboard
Attach plasterboard over the insulated surface, tape the joints, and skim for a clean finish.
Decorate and Enjoy
Once the plaster is dry, you can paint, wallpaper, or panel your new room. Enjoy the comfort and energy savings!
